Why Are Premium Hotels Switching to Wooden Key Cards?

For decades, the hotel key card has been almost synonymous with plastic.

But as premium hospitality increasingly focuses on sustainability, design and the details of the guest experience, hotels are rethinking even the smallest items they place in their guests' hands.

A wooden key card offers something different:

Natural material. Distinctive presentation. Modern RFID technology.

For a luxury hotel, boutique property, nature-focused lodge or safari destination, the material of the access card complements the environment and becomes another subtle expression of the brand. But there is more to wooden access cards than appearance.

When Natural Materials Become Part of the Experience

Premium hospitality is defined by details. Natural stone, timber, leather, linen and other tactile materials are carefully selected to create a particular atmosphere.

A conventional plastic key card can feel disconnected from that environment. A genuine wooden card feels different. Its natural grain and texture create a tactile object that sits naturally within a carefully designed guest experience.

For a luxury lodge, it reinforces a sense of place. For a boutique hotel, it complements the interior design. For a conservation-focused property, it supports a wider environmental narrative.

And increasingly, the question isn't simply whether the card looks natural.

It is whether it actually is.

Buyer Beware: Not Everything Described as "Wood" Is Wooden

As demand for sustainable products increases, so does the temptation to use sustainability terminology loosely.

Some cards described as "wooden", "eco" or "wood-effect" incorporate significant quantities of synthetic materials or only a very thin decorative wood layer.

That distinction matters.

A hotel undertaking a genuine sustainability assessment should establish exactly what a product is made from, where the material comes from and what certification or documentation supports its environmental claims.

For responsibly sourced timber, recognised certification such as FSC certification provides an important level of assurance regarding the source and responsible management of the material.

The lesson is simple:

Don't assume that a card that looks like wood is a sustainable wooden card.

Ask the supplier about material composition, sourcing and certification.

For hotels and hotel groups with formal sustainability policies, procurement requirements or environmental checklists, this distinction is critical.

Sustainability Beyond a Single Product

Sustainability in hospitality increasingly extends across the entire procurement chain. Hotel groups and individual properties are examining the materials behind everyday products, not only major initiatives such as renewable energy, water conservation and waste reduction.

Replacing virgin PVC with renewable or responsibly sourced materials where practical contributes to this broader approach. Across hundreds or thousands of purchasing decisions, small changes can become meaningful contributions to a hotel's sustainability objectives.

Branding Can Make Wooden Cards Even More Distinctive

The natural appearance of wood already provides a premium aesthetic, but the branding possibilities go considerably further.

Wooden access cards support high-quality printing of logos, colours, imagery and graphic details. Foil inlays and metallic detailing add another level of sophistication, creating a striking contrast against natural timber.

Gold, silver and other foil effects give the card the character of a premium branded object rather than a disposable access product.

This is particularly relevant to luxury hospitality, where the presentation of even the smallest guest touchpoint contributes to the overall perception of the property.

Red Carnation Hotel Group, for example, uses wooden cards carrying its distinctive red carnation emblem. It is a strong illustration of how natural material and brand identity combine to create a recognisable guest touchpoint.

The objective is not to make the card elaborate.

It is to make it feel intentional.

Modern Technology Inside a Natural Material

A natural exterior does not mean a compromise in technology.

Wooden hotel key cards incorporate RFID technology and provide the essential access function required by modern hospitality, provided the appropriate technology and configuration are specified for the property's existing locking system.

The material visible to the guest and the technology contained within the card are separate considerations.

The outside feels natural. The technology inside remains sophisticated.

Before introducing wooden or alternative-material cards, hotels should establish which electronic locking system they use and what RFID technology and encoding configuration it requires. The appropriate card is then specified accordingly.

This becomes particularly important when introducing a new supplier. The supplier needs to understand both the hotel's existing technology and its requirements for design, material and sustainability. The result should be seamless for the guest. They simply present or tap the card and enter their room. The sophistication behind that experience should never become the guest's problem.

Beyond the Hotel Room: Sustainable Access Wristbands

The same thinking extends beyond the traditional hotel key card.

Sustainable access wristbands made from materials such as cotton and wood provide an attractive alternative for environments where guests require controlled access to specific areas rather than simply a hotel room.

They are particularly suited to:

  • Spas and wellness resorts
  • Resort leisure facilities
  • Safari lodges
  • Private clubs
  • Swimming pools and beach facilities
  • Exclusive guest areas
  • Natural or conservation-focused destinations

For properties where the physical environment is strongly connected to nature, a synthetic plastic wristband can feel incongruous.

A natural-material access device aligns far more naturally with the surroundings while providing controlled access to designated facilities.

Not Every Property Needs Wood

Wooden cards and wristbands are not the right choice for every property. Some hotels prioritise unit cost or require particular technical specifications. Others may find recycled PVC, plant-based materials such as PPH BioBoard or bamboo better suited to their operational and environmental objectives.

The important development is that hotels now have a genuine choice. Material selection belongs alongside branding, technology, durability and sustainability when access products are specified.

Natural Materials, Modern Hospitality

Guests increasingly expect hotels to demonstrate that sustainability commitments extend beyond marketing statements. Hotel groups and individual properties are examining their supply chains, procurement decisions and everyday guest products as part of broader environmental objectives.

At the same time, premium hospitality continues to place enormous value on design, material quality and attention to detail.

Wooden access products sit at the intersection of these two trends. They provide a natural, tactile alternative to conventional plastic while supporting sophisticated branding and modern access technology.

The key is authenticity. A genuinely responsible material, properly sourced and supported by credible certification, is fundamentally different from a product that merely looks sustainable.

The Smallest Touchpoints Can Make a Difference

The hotel key card may be one of the smallest objects in a guest experience, but it carries a surprising amount of meaning. It provides access. It carries the brand. It reflects the hotel's design philosophy. And increasingly, it supports more responsible material choices.

For premium hotels considering alternatives to conventional plastic, wooden key cards offer an interesting combination of natural material, modern technology, distinctive branding and sustainability.

And the opportunity extends beyond room access. In the right environment, sustainable wooden and cotton wristbands provide a natural alternative for controlled access to spas, resorts, lodges and other special-use areas.

The question is no longer simply:

"What material can open the door?"

It is:

"What does the material say about the experience we're creating—and the values behind it?"

That is a question worth asking.

What you say matters. A lot.
